What it does not account for

  • Fees paid in instalments across the course years, which reduces the corpus needed slightly.
  • Currency risk on overseas education. A rupee that weakens 3% a year against the dollar adds materially to the bill.
  • Scholarships, education loans and the interest deduction available under Section 80E.
  • The glide down to debt in the final three years, which lowers the effective return near the goal.
